NEW CLASSICAL – ANDREA CLEARFIELD

February 27, 2023

New Classical Featured Artist – 02/27/23 – 03/12/23

In this week’s playlist, we feature the works of the award-winning American composer, Andrea Clearfield. Creating deep emotive musical languages that build cultural and artistic bridges, the music of Andrea Clearfield is performed widely in the U.S. and abroad. She has written 160+ works for opera, chorus, orchestra, chamber ensemble, dance and multimedia. A number of her compositions are inspired by Tibetan music fieldwork that she conducted in the Nepalese Himalaya. Among her works are sixteen cantatas including one for The Philadelphia Orchestra.

She has been awarded a Pew Center International Residency Award, a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, two Independence Foundation Fellowships and Fellowships at the Rockefeller’s Bellagio Center, American Academy in Rome, Yaddo, MacDowell and Copland House among others. Dr. Clearfield sits on the Boards of the Recording Academy/Grammy’s Philadelphia Chapter as well as Wildflower Composers, amplifying voices of female and gender-expansive composers. Passionate about creating community around the arts, she is also founder of the Philadelphia Salon featuring contemporary, classical, jazz, electronic, dance and world music since 1986. Active as a pianist, Clearfield was the keyboardist in the Relâche Ensemble for twenty-five years. We’ll hear music and performances by Andrea Clearfield throughout this playlist. Connect with Classical Music Indy’s New Classical channel for this and much more.

Free Speech Week Playlist

In the third week of October people across America celebrate Free Speech Week. In this country, we have the ability to freely express ourselves in words or music. While some classical composers may have experienced censorship during their lives, it didn’t keep them from expressing their views!
