Local Classical – Stuart Hyatt

October 5, 2020

Local Classical Featured Artist – 10/5/20-10/18/20

Stuart Hyatt is an Indianapolis-based and Grammy-nominated artist and musician who creates interdisciplinary creative projects. He curates the Field Works series, in which experimental musicians transform his locational audio field recordings into music. Hyatt’s projects follow rigorous conceptual frameworks – incorporating scientific data and field work – but present themselves through simple pop and folk aesthetics. The goal is to tell evocative stories about our complicated relationship with the natural world.

Released earlier this year, the latest album in the Field Works series, Ultrasonic, is perhaps the first-ever album to use the echolocations of bats as compositional source material. Ultrasonic is part of a broader storytelling project about the federally endangered Indiana bat.

We’ll have selections from the album as well as the music of other Indiana artists throughout this week’s programming on CMI’s Local Classical channel.
