LOCAL CLASSICAL – MARK ORTWEIN

April 5, 2021

Local Classical Featured Artist 04/05/21 – 04/18/21

In this week’s Local Classical channel, we’ll be highlighting local Indianapolis musician, Mark Ortwein. Mark is a bassoonist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, but his talents don’t stop at bassoon since he is also a sought-after instrumental doubler. Over the last 20 years, Mark has performed in many different musical projects including professional recordings, musical theater, chamber ensembles, jazz, and R&B groups, as well as many orchestral performances, including being a member of the Saxophone section for the Cincinnati Pops under Erich Kunzel. He has performed all over the world in many different venues, ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry and MTV. A versatile performer, Mark plays all the saxophones, clarinets, flutes, and bassoons.

Mark was also a guest on Classical Music Indy’s Classical Pairings podcast back in June 2020. You can listen to the podcast by clicking here. Connect with Classical Music Indy’s Local Classical playlist this week to hear Mark play different instruments and genres.

NEW CLASSICAL – ANNA THORVALDSDOTTIR

Anna’s “detailed and powerful” (Guardian) orchestral writing has garnered her awards from the New York Philharmonic, Lincoln Center, the Nordic Council, and the UK’s Ivors Academy, as well as commissions by many of the world’s top orchestras. Her music is composed as much by sounds and nuances as by harmonies and lyrical material – it is written as an ecosystem of sounds, where materials continuously grow in and out of each other, often inspired in an important way by nature and its many qualities, in particular structural ones, like proportion and flow.
