Local Classical – Eliza Brown

March 9, 2020

Featured Artist 3/9/20 – 3/15/20.

We continue our celebration of Women’s History Month this week by featuring music by composer Eliza Brown. Brown’s work is often interdisciplinary, with a recent focus on musical theater and opera. She also writes music that is, what she calls, intertextual, opening dialogues with existing pieces of music, historical styles, and other cultural artifacts. She is currently Assistant Professor of Music at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where she teaches composition and music theory. Eliza has also had a long-time affiliation with the Walden School Young Musicians Program, where she currently serves as Academic Dean.

Brown’s compositions have been performed by leading interpreters of new music, including Ensemble Dal Niente, Spektral Quartet, International Contemporary Ensemble, Network for New Music, Ensemble SurPlus, Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, and Wild Rumpus New Music Collective. Her works have been heard on stages throughout the United States and in Mexico, Colombia, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates, and have been recorded on multiple labels.

He’s pursuing a Master’s in GIS at IUPUI. At age four, Timothy started learning piano from his mother. At Macalester College he discovered jazz, delving into the jazz piano repertoire by learning Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum transcriptions, including ones he transcribed himself. In 2013, he also started taking lessons in jazz with Mike Vasich, and classical lessons with Lauri Saeger-Wright.
