Upper Elementary (Grades 3-5)

Learning Modules

Teaching Music Composition

Teaching Music Composition is a virtual, self-guided music education program for upper elementary-aged students. Designed as a standalone six-lesson sequence, students will be taken through an introduction to composing music. The course begins using shapes as a form of graphic notation to represent rhythm and a simplified staff to introduce the concept of writing different pitches.

Gradually, graphic notation is replaced with standard notation and the full musical staff is added.

Along the way, students watch instructional videos, gain access to a virtual xylophone and engage in fun dictation & compositional exercises where the notes that are written are played back for the students. By the end of this program, students will be able to compose and perform their own 8 measure melody!
