New Classical Featured Artist – 4/13/20-4/26-20
This week on CMI Streaming’s New Classical channel we feature music recorded by the PRISM Quartet. We’re all very familiar with the string quartet as an ensemble, but PRISM, a saxophone quartet, takes chamber music in a new direction. PRISM seeks to place the saxophone in unexpected contexts, chart fresh musical territory, and to challenge, inspire, and move audiences. The quartet was formed in 1984 by students at the University of Michigan and has gone one to perform across the country and earn numerous awards including winning the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and twice receiving the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. PRISM was also chosen by Musical America as “Outstanding Young Artists,” and they have performed on “Entertainment Tonight” and National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.”
Champions of new music, PRISM has commissioned nearly 300 works, many by internationally celebrated composers, including Pulitzer Prize-winners Julia Wolfe, William Bolcom, Jennifer Higdon, Zhou Long, and Bernard Rands. In 1997, PRISM initiated its own concert series, now in Philadelphia, New York City, and Ann Arbor, presenting the newest compositions created for the ensemble by composers from around the world.
