This week on CMI Streaming’s New Classical channel, we continue our celebration of Black History Month by featuring a couple of African-American conductors. Originally from Indiana, Kazem Abdullah is an up-and-coming conductor who was engaged with orchestras around the world, including a stint as Music and Artistic Director of the City of Aachen, Germany from 2012 to 2017. During his tenure, he succeeded in reaching newer and diverse audiences through innovative programming and moving out of the concert hall, and into atypical venues.
Paul Freeman
Conductor Paul Freeman was the founder of the Chicago Sinfonietta, which he led from 1987 until his retirement in 2011. After earning degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Freeman studied in Germany at the University for Music in Berlin as part of a Fulbright Scholarship. Before starting the Chicago Sinfonietta, Freeman worked with the Opera Theatre of Rochester, the Dallas Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, and the Victoria Symphony in Canada.
Connect with CMI Streaming for music conducted by Kazem Abdullah and Paul Freeman, and much more.
