New Classical Featured Artist – 06/19/23 – 07/16/23
In honor of Pride month, this month’s playlist features performances by Cor Flammae, Vancouver’s art chorus of classically trained, queer singers, performing queer content. Cor Flammae is a project by queer singers and conductors to explore unsung queer perspectives in classical choral music. They create choral music experiences for queer people, by queer people, and deepen the understanding of historical and modern queer experiences for everyone. Composed from the ranks of the city’s top-flight choral ensembles and singers, the choir seeks to reveal the hidden queer heritage often ignored in the conservative world of classical music.
Exploring works ranging from those of well-known historical figures to pieces by celebrated contemporary composers, Cor Flammae forges a common thread between past and present, illuminating the rich and furtive spaces left out by the usual account. The ensemble hopes to give visibility to queer identities within a musical template, and change the way we listen to the music of our talented community. How does a rejection by mainstream society in a conservative genre impact art and career? How can we help queer music lovers and performers to feel welcome, encouraged, and invited to the choral music world, where they rarely see reflections of themselves or their journeys in popular writing and performance? Cor Flammae seeks to answer these questions through the often marginalized lens of our shared life experiences as queer musicians.
We’ll hear host Salvador speak with Creative Director, Missy Clarkson, about Cor Flammae’s mission, vision, history, and performances throughout this playlist. You’ll hear lots of music by LGBTQ+ artists and much more when you connect with Classical Music Indy Streaming’s New Classical channel.
