My Music. My Story. is one of Classical Music Indy’s new initiatives to feature music, musicians and music lovers in a fun way. We spoke with Jason King, Entertainment Manager at The Vogue, to learn how he interacts and thinks about music.
What is your favorite way to experience music?
Live and up close. Nothing beats watching fingers on a guitar or a performer’s facial expressions as they react to the crowd. I am okay with a little crowd contact or a shirt covered in beer.. it’s worth it.
Name a song that reminds you of the place where you grew up?
“Old Man” by Neil Young. My love for music came from my dad. He used to sit me down in front of the record player and tell me all the hidden meanings and back stories for all the records he loved. He would tell me about the civil rights innuendos between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd during the time of “Southern Man” & Sweet Home Alabama.” He even used Frank Zappa to keep me from eating the “Yellow Snow.” My dad gave me a rare music education that still influences me to this day.
What’s an unexpected place where you find music plays a key role to the atmosphere or situation?
An elevator. I usually have a lot of anxiety when riding in elevators, but if they are playing classical music…classical music soothes the savage beast.
What restaurant or bar in your community creates the best mood with their choice of music, be it live or over the airwave?
The Mousetrap has found a special niche by recreating an outdoor festival vibe every night of the week. Positive vibes are in abundance and it’s the best people watching in Indy. Try the stew.
What is your favorite event that takes place in the community?
There are too many to choose just one. Pride Festival, ORANJE, Brew Fest, Zombie Walk… Indianapolis truly has something for everyone.
