Allison Sommers is a flute student currently engaging in graduate study in Instrumental Performance at The University of Alabama where she studies with Dr. Diane Boyd Schultz. Prior to joining the studio at UA, Allison studied with Alison Brown Sincoff at Ohio University where she completed a certificate in Music Leadership. At Ohio University she performed with the Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Shimmering Silver Flute Quartet, Flute Choir and a Graduate Flute and Clarinet Duo. During this time, she was a featured Piccoloist with the Wind Symphony and performed Principal Flute on Dvorak’s 8th Symphony. Allison served as a substitute 2nd Flute/Piccolo for the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra where she was a featured soloist on Ravel’s Bolero. She also performed with the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds and the Muskingum University Christmas Festival Chamber Orchestra. Allison holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Muskingum University where she studied with Dr. Erin Helgeson Torres. While at Muskingum University, Allison performed with the Wind Ensemble, Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, and Concert Choir and she was awarded the Amy B. Leiendecker Award in Music, which is awarded to a senior for four years of outstanding service to the department of music. Allison can be heard as the flute soloist on the recording of Zebulon Highben’s choral work “The Spangled Heavens.” During her undergraduate career, Allison was a member of several organizations including Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota, and the Collegiate National Association for Music Education. Allison is passionate about working with high school students and was a band camp flute instructor for schools across Ohio including Circleville High School (5 years), Meadowbrook High School (2 years), and Piketon Jr/Sr High School (2 years). Allison was honored to work as a remote Office Intern with the National Flute Association during the Spring of 2022. Allison is an ardent lover of performing arts health and she has taken athletic training courses with Dr. Jeff Russell as well as body mapping courses with Lea Pearson. She currently resides in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with her four cats and four axolotls.
